Reusing SingStar microphones

About a year ago, before I took the plunge to buy a PS3, I bought a copy of SingStar for my PS2 along with the wired microphones. These microphones connect to the console via a USB connector and are 100% compatible with the PS3 versions of the game.

Although SingStar is a fun game (even if you’re not vocally gifted) and has had some great recent releases like SingStar ABBA and SingStar Queen, recently I’ve found these microphones to be very useful outside of the game itself.

I keep one of the microphones on a boom microphone stand beside my desk and use it to talk with other players in games like Burnout Paradise. The sensitivity of the mic just about perfect for only picking up the sounds you want it to pick up. The official PS3 headset is annoyingly oversensitive with background chatter or game soundtracks often bleeding in. Thank God for “Mute Player”.

I also use the microphone on my PC for Skype calls, etc. Until recently I used to unplug the microphone’s 3.5mm jack from the USB adaptor and then plug into the PC’s mic input, but then I discovered that my PC recognised the USB adaptor, which makes it much easier to connect via a handily placed USB hub.

The one thing I haven’t tried yet, which should also work well, is to plug a headset mic into the USB adaptor. I often work and play using headphones, so using a headset with decent cans on the PS3 would be nice. Unfortunately my four year old daughter has recently demolished two sets of headphones, so I’m not quite ready to throw any money at a decent headset yet.

EDIT: I was also able to use these mic’s while reviewing The Beatles:RockBand.
